Jade on 36 Restaurant and Bar Pudong Shangri-la,Shanghai, China. The most common interpretation of Chinese design concepts in modern interiors take the form of combinations between sleek contemporary interiors with some traditional pieces of furniture and décor. Jade on 36 is a dramatic departure from this cliché. By taking traditional elements from China’s everyday life and re-interpreting them in different medium, scale and context, Tihany Design has created an entire new vocabulary for contemporary Chinese design.
The everyday rice bowl becomes a gigantic 3 dimensional sculptured gateway to the restaurant. The emperor’s gown becomes the inspiration for an intricately “folded” ceiling feature in the main dining room. The snuff bottles assume a gigantic proportion and become sculptured glass floor light fixtures, and the small and delicate silk box containing jade objects become a full scale bar enclosure where people are the objects.
The 92-seat fine dining restaurant takes the concept of contemporary Chinese design to a more sophisticated and refined level, thus celebrating the progress and inspirations of the country and culture itself.
