DANIEL New York. Located on Manhattan's Upper East Side, DANIEL, the eponymous flagship of famed chef Daniel Boulud's hospitality empire, is one of the most celebrated restaurants in the world. Since its opening in 1993, DANIEL has garnered superlative recognition countless times, including earning a coveted 4-star rating from the New York Times and being named "one of the ten best restaurants in the world" by the International Herald Tribune. With Daniel Boulud's highest tradition of excellence in mind, Tihany Design was chosen to recreate the entire space for a modern, sophisticated, luxurious, and bespoke experience.
Without disturbing the original structural shell, Tihany Design has modernized and invigorated the space with fresh lighting concepts, unique fixtures, and custom furniture for an overall contemporary, yet still elegant, expression. Lighting design throughout consists of glass-encased light boxes acting as balustrades, which cast a warm glow and enhance the traditional elements by subdividing the large space into more intimate sections. The furnishings also help to revitalize the room by creating a sense of fluidity between the classic and the contemporary. Inspired by indigenous artwork, the custom carpet is composed of neutral shades and is offset by an abstract circular dot pattern. The carpets delicate dot pattern is continued on the fine china by Bernadaud, and is also seen on the bespoke porcelain pieces that make up the impressive circular chandelier hanging above the guests. Soft, curved banquette seating emphasizing comfort with harmonizing proportions is contrasted by artisanal wooden chairs with seat cushions in sumptuous bordeaux leather. A wine room as well as a bibliothèque of various items displayed in glass light boxes can be viewed in the dining area. In the back of the main dining room, a contemporary feature wall acts as a centerpiece. Elegant wall sconces take the shape of branches, incorporating a natural element into the modern space.
