Bar Boulud Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London, UK.
Inspired by the wines of Bourgogne, Tihany Design conceived a contemporary interpretation of a vintage wine cellar for Chef Boulud’s new London restaurant, Bar Boulud. As guests enter the bar lounge, they are embraced by the design of modern, vaulted ceilings paired with classic raw materials such as wood, leather, cork, and zinc. Vintage oak floors and wainscoting are reminiscent of traditional wine barrels, and red leather banquettes and chairs conjure the warm depths of a delectable Burgundy. A unique bar topped in zinc with a cork panel coating the front dominates the entrance of the restaurant, with an up-lit étagère sheltering glasses above and bottles behind. Custom chandeliers composed of a series of metal rings represent deconstructed wine barrels, casting soft, natural light below. Moving into the dining room, a functional and sleek open kitchen features clean, white, French subway tiles, while a long glass display offers guests tastes of authentic French charcuterie and a mélange of cheese, evocative of a traditional French Bistro. As guests enjoy the seasonal bistro fare in the main dining area, ceiling recesses which reveal a hint of burgundy further emphasize the fundamental essence of the restaurant. In the private dining room, which holds capacity for up to 16 guests, the oak floors transform to carpet and oversized versions of the deconstructed wine barrel chandeliers once again delight patrons. Collectively, these subtle and sophisticated details referencing classic French viniculture result in an unforgettable dining experience in the heart of London.
